CAMP PHILMONT 2023 INFORMATION
There have been several updates and briefings at the Scout Meetings. In addition there was a virtual parent meeting held in December. Please see details below if you missed that meeting or need additional information. You may always reach out to Connor Keech or Mr. Cobb for additional details.
Philmont Virtual Parent Meeting # 4: June 15, 2023
Updated information as of June 15th 2023. Please see below additional information presented at the parents meeting and previous meetings further down the page. A video of the meeting is also below. Please contact Connor Keech or Mr. Payne with any questions or concerns.
Travel:
Meet at the Church at 3:00 AM on Friday 23 Jun, to depart no later than 3:30 AM.
- The boys should travel with a small day pack (Scout Uniform is NOT required for this travel day).
- In the Travel Pack (no suitcases) these should be things the boys need, but do not need to take on the trail.
- Field Uniform (Class A Uniform. Do not bring neckerchiefs and woggles)
- Swimsuit if you plan to get in the water at Great Wolf Logde
- Sleepwear if you are not bringing it on the trail.
- Clean underclothes for the trip home
- There is very limited room to store things at Philmont so do not bring a lot of extra items and no suitcases.
For Philmont:
- Follow the packing list – we will go through the packs on the first day at Philmont with a Ranger to confirm we have the correct gear.
- Things to consider that we don’t always bring – we will be more exposed hiking than what we are used to.
- Wide brim hat
- Sunglasses
- Lip Balm
- Sunscreen
- Cool/Colder weather – we will be at altitude and the nights can get quite chilly so do not ignore the cold weather gear on the packing
- Rain gear is constantly stressed on the videos – make sure you have quality rain jackets and rain pants.
- Towel and toiletries – there will be two opportunities to shower on the trail and the night before we fly home.
Packing:
- Traveling to Philmont – the backpack should not be full. There should be 30% or more room for food and crew gear (think the size of a basketball). Do not overpack
- You will want something to put the backpack in when we check it at the airport (preferably something that can collapse down very small).
- Each boy has a copy of the adventure guide – the packing lists are in there. They need to tell us if they don’t have it.
Medical:
- I would like for everybody to bring their medical forms on Tuesday so I can check them, take them, and upload them.
- I need shot records and Insurance Information as well.
- Any medicines need to be in the original container with current expirations to include inhalers and Epi-pens – so these need to be checked now.
- Please bring Tuesday as well completed and signed Blue Sky Release forms:
Can be found on the troop website: (either one -one is a form fill pdf the other is print and fill out)
Important Information:
- Flight information – flight numbers and times and record locator (L5DHCT)
- Trek Number – 624-7B
- Philmont Contact Information
- Blue Sky Contact Info
- Wear your hiking boots for travel on the plane.
- I would like a complete list of parent phone numbers to carry with us.
- Make sure your pocketknife is your pack and not in your carry on
Electronic devices:
- Recommend they bring no electronic devices. However, if a parent wants their scout to have a phone while traveling, they need to tell the adult leadership and we will work the arrangements. On the trek – Nate will have his for medical use, the adult leadership will have theirs, and the Crew Leader (you).
For Us/Crew to Cover:
I need/questions I have:
- I need everybody who is WFA and CPR to provide WFA and CPR Certification documentation to upload.
- Have we identified the other two leadership positions?
- Lighters/matches – did we ship those with the stoves?
Crew Gear:
- Tent Stakes – Mr Gephart will take care of those
- Ground Clothes – Mr. Payne will take care of those
- Tents – we will use Philmont’s. I will bring my personal tent for the odd number of adults and we will swap out adults using it.
- Duct Tape – we need to bring some
- Trowel – we need one. Will bring “Dug”
- Water filters – Philmont says we don’t need. I disagree. Mr. Payne will bring mine and think we should bring the troop ones as well.
- First Aid Kit – Mr. Gephart will bring
- Multi-Tool – crew gear
- Sewing kit - ?
- Carabiners, Locking – Mr. Gephart to bring his 4
- Grill for stove top – recommend we bring it
